fortable in those situations. I should have been able to say “the bell with it” and gone to those parties feeling comfortable. Instead I removed myself. I did go out, but I wasn’t experienced in long-term relationships.

After high school, I moved from my Catholic home to a dormitory at Metropolitan Hospital. Metro was strict. No jeans or pants outside of the dorm, mandatory study hours, in at :Lo:oo every weeknight, and no men above the first floor. We couldn’t sneak anybody in because there was only one entrance to the dorm and one set of elevators. Ron couldn’t believe it. Nobody could.

The lack of freedom was good in some ways. It gave you an excuse. If a creep you met at a frat party said, “Stay with me tonight,” you could say, “I can’t because I’ll get kicked out.” But maybe a different kind of situation would have broadened me more. Liz and Maureen, who got their nursing degrees at a university, had their own house with a gay guy their second year in school. I’m sure that’s a broadening situation.

I was a lot more sheltered.

My first sexual partner was Ron. I didn’t start dating him until my last year in nursing school. We didn’t marry for another three years. So I graduated without having a good understanding of what husbands and wives begin to mean to each other, or what any two people in a long-term relationship mean to each other.

As a nurse, I was not prepared to deal with certain things. I became embarrassed relatively easily. I was embarrassed the first few times I saw young guys, patients, walk around with hardly any clothes on. I remember my face getting really flushed. I remember my face getting flushed the first few times I banded a male patient a washcloth and said, “Okay, now wash between your legs.” NNben I told that to Katie later, she said, “Ob, I had the same problern at first. What I thought a nurse did was give out pills and make people better. I didn’t know you gave a man a bath!”

That kind of embarrassment is often cured by experience. Certainly mine was. But length of time on the job doesn’t necessarily make it easy to talk to patients about sex. Neither does gettiDg older, and neither does getting married. I know. Now that I’m married and five years older and more experienced than I was
